China's access to US Military Tech

The Wallstreet Journal recently published an article titled “U.S. Drops Case Against Chinese Scientist at UVA”. The Chinese student in question, studying underwater robotics, was accused of stealing trade secrets for the Chinese government.

This case is one of many where visiting Chinese scientists have been under suspicion of operating as Chinese informants. Most recently, the Chinese consulate in Houston was shut down when it was discovered Chinese diplomats had hidden the identities of several Chinese operatives posing as students.

While the status of this student at the University of Virginia remains mysterious, this question of Chinese students studying US military technology holds larger implications.

US universities routinely study alongside Chinese students and scientists regardless of the fact that China is currently financing the world’s second largest military, and tensions between the US and China are reaching new heights through military demonstrations on the coast of China.

This growing rivalry between the world’s most dominant militaries seems to spark little concern in the academic field and the general US population.
